MIDDLE MANAGERS: THE “SANDWICH” LAYER OF THE ORGANNIZATION

Middle managers often face pressure from both sides.

Top-down: Senior leaders demand results.

Bottom-up: Employees need support, resources, and direction.

They have to:

Deliver Results

while also:

Develop People.

This is one of the most difficult roles in an organization.

Deloitte reports that only around 26% of organizations say their managers are very or extremely effective at driving team performance.

This creates a clear paradox:

Organizations expect managers to develop people, while managers spend much of their time dealing with immediate work.

The Middle Manager Role Needs to Change

Managers should not simply be:

Message Carriers – passing instructions down.

They need to become:

Strategy Translators – turning strategy into team goals and actions.

A strong manager should be able to answer:

Why? – Why does it matter?

What? – What must we achieve?

How? – How will we do it?

Who? – Who owns it?

When? – When must it be completed?

Middle managers are not simply the middle layer. They are the layer that turns strategy into execution.

LET Perspective

Investing in middle management is not simply about developing another management level.

It is about building execution capability across the organization.
